Description

A Milton Series postcard of the War of Independence monument on Main Street, Charleville, Co. Cork, from the John James collection. This postcard was never posted. The monument was unveiled by in October 1930 by Eamon de Valera, a Nationalist leader in the Easter Rising of 1916 and of the War of Independence (1919-21), and the then (1930) leader of Fianna Fáil, the Republican Party, the political party who on the cusp of taking up the reins of power in the Irish Free State and would go on to dominate political scene in Ireland (south of the border) for most of the 20th century.
